Responding to a competitor

Diagnose a competitive threat before reacting, size it as noise, flank or core, and choose a response that plays to your strengths instead of theirs.

"A new startup just launched a cheaper version of our product. What do we do?" "Our biggest rival copied our best feature. How do we respond?" These prompts test whether you stay calm. The candidate who says "match their price and ship the same feature fast" in the first minute has failed the real test, which is diagnosis before action.

Key idea Find out exactly which customers the competitor is winning, and why, before you choose a response. Most bad responses come from reacting to the headline instead of the data.
