Recovering is a skill, not a failure
Every candidate slips during a product design answer. Interviewers expect it. What they notice is whether you catch it and fix it calmly. A clean recovery costs you little, and it shows self-awareness, which is a big part of the job.
Each trap below comes with what it looks like, why it costs you, and a recovery line you can say word for word. Most recoveries work the same way: name the slip in a few words, and step back onto the right rung of the Design Ladder.
Key idea Recovering out loud beats recovering silently. A short "Let me step back" tells the interviewer you noticed the slip, which is evidence in itself.
