What a goal is
"Increase engagement" is not a goal. A goal has four parts:
- Metric: what you count.
- Baseline: where it is today.
- Target: where you want it.
- Deadline: by when.
It also names the guardrails it must not break. "Raise weekly attended classes from 300,000 to 330,000 by the end of the quarter, with the no-show rate staying under 8%" is a goal.
Interviewers ask for goals in several forms. "How would you measure success for this feature?" "What goals would you set for the launch?" "What would make this a success after six months?" The method below answers all of them.

- Set a quarterly goal for a ride-sharing app's driver retention team.
- What metrics would you track for a newly launched podcast app in its first 90 days?
- You shipped a new onboarding flow for a photo-editing app. How do you know it is working?
