What's the biggest professional risk you've taken?
How to approach it
Pick a calculated risk where you weighed the downside in advance, not a reckless gamble, and explain how you decided.
How a strong answer opens
“The biggest risk I've taken was leaving a stable analyst job to become the first PM at a twelve-person startup. I'll explain how I sized the downside before I said yes.”
Outline of a strong answer
Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.
- The decision, such as leaving a stable role or betting a quarter on an unproven idea
- What you stood to gain and to lose
- How you reduced the downside before committing
- What happened, good or bad
- What it taught you about judging risk
- Whether you would make the same call again, and why
Where this question usually goes wrong
Describing a reckless gamble, or a risk so small it isn't really one, with no sense of how you weighed the downside.
