Tell me about a time you missed a deadline.
How to approach it
Own the miss, say when you first saw the risk, and show that you raised it early rather than on the due date.
How a strong answer opens
“I committed to delivering an integration by the end of the quarter and missed by three weeks. I saw the risk six weeks out, and I'll explain how I raised it and what I changed in how I estimate.”
Outline of a strong answer
Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.
- The commitment and who depended on it
- The early warning signs and when you noticed them
- When and how you told the people affected
- The recovery plan and the new date
- What you changed in how you estimate or track work
Where this question usually goes wrong
Blaming dependencies for the miss, or revealing you told people on the due date, instead of raising the risk early.
