Tell me about a product or project that failed. What did you learn?

How to approach it

Choose a real failure with real stakes, own your part in one clear sentence, and spend most of the answer on what you changed afterward.

How a strong answer opens

“I led a feature to get small businesses sending invoices from our app, aiming for 20% adoption in a quarter, and we reached 4%. My part was not testing demand before we built.”

Outline of a strong answer

Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.

  1. The project and the goal, with the number you were aiming for
  2. What actually happened, with numbers if possible
  3. Your part in it, stated without blaming others
  4. What you did once you saw it failing: stop, pivot, or salvage
  5. Two specific lessons, such as testing demand before building
  6. A later project where you applied those lessons and what changed

Where this question usually goes wrong

Picking a fake failure or blaming others, and spending most of the answer on what went wrong instead of what you changed.
