Tell me about a time you took ownership of a problem that wasn't yours.

How to approach it

Choose a story where a gap was hurting users or the business, nobody owned it, and you stepped in without stepping on toes.

How a strong answer opens

“Customers were getting failed-payment emails with broken links, and the problem sat between the billing and messaging teams, so nobody owned it. I told both teams I'd take it on, then fixed it.”

Outline of a strong answer

Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.

  1. The problem and why it fell between teams
  2. The cost of leaving it alone
  3. How you told the likely owners before acting
  4. What you actually did to fix it
  5. The result, with a number if possible
  6. How you made ownership clear so it would not fall through again

Where this question usually goes wrong

Telling a hero story where you took over another team's work without telling them, which reads as stepping on toes.
