Behavioralstretch
Tell me about a time you had to deliver bad news to a customer or partner.
How to approach it
Show that you delivered it early, in plain words and with a plan, and that the relationship survived because of how you handled it.
How a strong answer opens
“I had to tell our largest customer that a feature they'd paid for would ship two months late. I called them the day we knew, with the facts, two options and what we could offer.”
Outline of a strong answer
Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.
- The news, for example a delayed feature a customer had paid for
- How you prepared: facts, options, what you could offer
- How you delivered it and in what channel
- Their reaction and how you handled the hardest moment
- The follow-through that rebuilt trust
- What you would do the same next time
Where this question usually goes wrong
Delivering the news late, by email and without options, or skipping how you rebuilt the relationship afterward.
