Where the usual format goes wrong

You have probably met STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result), a common format for behavioral answers. It is a reasonable start, but it tends to produce three problems:

  1. Too much setup. "Situation" and "Task" invite a long preamble. Many candidates spend a full minute on company background before anything happens.
  2. Too little "I". "Action" quietly turns into what the team did. The interviewer finishes the answer not knowing which decisions were yours.
  3. No reflection. The format stops at the result. The interviewer then asks "what did you learn?" and the candidate improvises something generic.

This kit uses its own shape, built to fix all three. It keeps STAR's core of context, action and result, and changes three things: you give the ending first, you name an option you rejected, and you state what it cost.
