How would you improve the onboarding of a budgeting app?

How to approach it

Ask what the first win is for a new user. In budgeting it is usually seeing where your money went, not setting up categories.

How a strong answer opens

“I'd like to know where new users drop off today. My guess is the first win is seeing where last month's money went, not building categories, so I'd design onboarding to reach that view fast.”

Outline of a strong answer

Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.

  1. Clarify the app's model and where new users drop off today
  2. Define the aha moment: first clear view of last month's spending
  3. Find friction: account linking, too many setup steps, empty screens
  4. Ideas: skip-for-now linking, sample data, auto-categorization, one goal to start
  5. Choose the change that gets users to the aha moment fastest
  6. Measure setup completion and week-one retention

Where this question usually goes wrong

Adding tutorials and tooltips to a long setup flow instead of cutting steps so new users see value before they are asked for effort.
