How would you grow a B2B SaaS product from 1,000 to 10,000 paying customers?
How to approach it
Find out where the current 1,000 came from and which customers stay and expand. Grow by doubling down on what already works.
How a strong answer opens
“I'd first find out where our current 1,000 customers came from and which ones stay and expand. Growth usually comes from doubling down on what already works.”
Outline of a strong answer
Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.
- Study the current 1,000: which segments retain and expand, and which channel found them
- Pick the segment with the best retention and a large pool of similar companies
- Fix activation and onboarding for that segment before spending more on acquisition
- Match the channel to deal size: self-serve and product-led for small teams, sales for large accounts
- Add a referral or integration-partner channel that reaches lookalike companies
- Set stage targets, such as 2,500 then 5,000 customers, with payback period and net revenue retention as checks
Where this question usually goes wrong
Listing every growth channel at once without first studying which existing customers stay, expand and could be found again.
