Why are you leaving your current role?

How to approach it

Stay positive. Talk about what you are moving toward, not what you are escaping.

How a strong answer opens

“I've had a great run where I am: I shipped our first mobile app and grew it to a third of usage. What I can't get there is work on a product sold to businesses, which is exactly what this role offers.”

Outline of a strong answer

Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.

  1. One or two things you achieved in your current role
  2. What you can no longer get there, such as product scope or a type of user
  3. Why this role offers it
  4. Never criticize your manager or company

Where this question usually goes wrong

Complaining about your manager, pay or company, which leaves the interviewer picturing how you'll describe this job one day.
