How would you improve WhatsApp group chats?
How to approach it
Ask which type of group you are fixing. A family group, a neighborhood group of 200 people and a five-friend group break in different ways.
How a strong answer opens
“Groups break in different ways depending on size and purpose. Which group are we fixing? A five-friend group and a 200-person neighborhood group have opposite problems.”
Outline of a strong answer
Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.
- Clarify the goal: engagement, satisfaction or reduced muting
- Segment groups by size and purpose
- Pick large community groups and name pain points: noise, lost key messages, unwanted adds
- Ideas: pinned summaries, topic threads, admin approvals, mention-only mode
- Prioritize, weighing simplicity of the product against power features
- Measure mute rate, group exits and replies per message
Where this question usually goes wrong
Adding power features that complicate small family groups while trying to fix the noise in large community groups.
