Product sensestretch
Design a product to help remote teams feel more connected.
How to approach it
Push back on the vague goal. Ask what 'connected' looks like when it works: trust, fast help, or simply knowing colleagues as people.
How a strong answer opens
“Connected is vague, so I'd like to define it as something we can observe, such as how quickly someone gets help from a colleague they've never met. Then I'll pick a group, probably new hires.”
Outline of a strong answer
Try answering out loud for a few minutes before you open this.
- Clarify team size, time zones and whether this is a new product or an add-on
- Define connection in observable terms, such as asking a colleague for help
- Segment users: new hires, managers, long-time remote staff
- Pick new hires and find their pain points: no hallway chat, fear of bothering people
- Propose solutions such as buddy pairing, async intros and office-hours rooms
- Measure time to first cross-team help request and new-hire retention
Where this question usually goes wrong
Proposing virtual happy hours and games without defining what connection means or how you would know it improved.
